Since I work from home, I was very excited about moving to this three-bedroom house and finally having a dedicated office. I’ve had my cozy little office areas in our past apartments, but it’s so much easier to be productive in a room designed around productivity (surprise, surprise). And there’s nothing like closing the door on your work at the end of the day, either.

Working at home, it’s sometimes hard to separate work and home-life. A dedicated office goes a long way.

The other awesome part of a dedicated office is, of course, dedicated office furniture. I got a new desk last week, and it’s an absolute joy to work at:

It was designed by Arne Vodder, according to the dealer I bought it from–the only tags I’ve found are the Made in Denmark stamp and the original customs sticker from its import.

That vintage rug used to be in the living room, but its size is much better suited for this space, and I’m glad to have it here.

Sidenote: it is SO hard to take decent photos in this room, (a) because I’m still taking photos with my iphone, which I’m going to remedy very soon, I promise, and (b) because it’s a small space and the light from that window totally overwhelms the photos. I had to close the shade to take these, which I normally never do.

The window looks out onto our yard and our woods, and my two happy brass deer keep an eye on the world from there:

Back to the desk now.

On the back is a bookshelf and a small locking cabinet (bar?). The front has three drawers on one side, and one file drawer on the other, plus a shelf in the middle.

That’s the Kevi chair I found when we first moved to Port Townsend (more on that here). I’m still trying to figure out the best desk chair, which is why you see a couple different options here. I kinda miss the Steelcase executive chair we had back in Madison…

And since I don’t have any photos of the front of the desk, let me just show you the photo from the dealer:

Lovely.

I bought it from Ten22Home in Seattle, and they were a real pleasure to work with. I haven’t actually had a chance to visit their storefront; the owner delivered this piece and the wall unit I just put up in the living room (see that piece here) for me last week. I’m definitely going to stop by next time I’m in Seattle though, as dangerous as that might be for my bank account.

The other side of the office is not quite so finished. I want it to be a cozy spot to read or watch movies, so I’m on the lookout for a pair of good-looking lounge chairs. For now, the two side chairs I recently recovered are hanging out there–

And across from the chairs, our “tv,” which is obviously not a tv at all:

hint: it's a computer.

I just got this bookcase/cabinet, so I haven’t had a lot of time to figure out yet what belongs on those shelves. So they look a little sad. I’m out of town at the moment, but when I return, I’ll have a new camera and some new ideas, and hopefully you’ll get to see this space improve a lot in a short time.

This space is very much a work in progress, but it’s already made me so much more productive and happy at work. I can’t wait to see how the office will evolve.

For now, I’ll leave you with one of my favorite parts of this office (up there with the classy desk and the brassy deer). It’s a drawing by a very talented new friend of mine, Perry Garvin–

I like working alongside that, for sure.
